Man's hubris knows no end. The amount of good beavers do and people just can't understand and utilize their free labor.

When I was a kid (90s and early 2000s for reference) I used to go trapping with my grandfather. This video brought back a lot of great memories and I was surprised at just how close your method was to his.

I have no problem with trapping beavers in a sustainable way, but people need to stop comparing them with rats or other rodents. Beavers unlike rats have a lifespan of 10+ years (up to 24 in captivity), also they take about two years to teach their young because their life is complicated (they wont leave until then when they are ready to make their own lodge). Not learning the basics from their parents will lead them to die their first year on their own. They are able to mate when they are 3 years old. Beavers are monogamous as long as their partner is alive and raise 2 to 4 kits together per year. They only have 4 babies a year at most. A rat in comparison lifespan is of 12 months to 2 years (5 in captivity). A rat can have 5 litters per year of up to 14 babies each (70 rats a year). A rat also reaches puberty and can breed at only 5 weeks. Rats multiply very quickly and leave on their own after a few weeks. Beavers in contrast build dams that are incredibly complex. The world's biggest beaver dam is 2,790 ft long which is more than twice the length of the Hoover dam and can be seen from space. They are both rodents but thinking they are just rats is the same as comparing humans to lemurs because they are both primates.

Also, biodiversity increases where there are beaver dams. They increase fish biodiversity and have other benefits to the environment. Just look it up, tons of studies on this. Too many comments insulting beavers as large rats without appreciating how amazing they are. However, nothing wrong with hunting and trapping them, as long as it is sustainable.

Beaver are a renewable resource and no one respects , admires and supports them more than trappers and hunters.Conservationists- hunters and trappers are responsible for rebound of Beaver, deer, wild turkey and elk. There are more of these animals in the U.S. Now than in the late 1800's. To condemn this gentleman/craftsman shows your ignorance of nature and ignores mankinds' responsibility as natures steward of the land. For instance, the greatest poacher is the real estate developer. It saddens me when the "Snowflakes " who feel everything should be man made and we should let " nature be" have no idea what life is all about. Seek nature, reality. Stop being a tool of commerce and technology. I wish this person made more instructional videos. I appreciate him and his profession. Snowflakes - go watch " American Idol", and further distance yourself from the real world.
